As a soloist, Bede has had performances broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Scotland, Concert FM, Schweizer Radio, and Resonance FM, and in 2005 was the winner of the Philip Jones Memorial Prize from the Royal Overseas League. He has performed as a soloist with the Auckland Philharmonia (Haydn), Scottish Philharmonic (Steve Forman’s Looking for Harris), Glasgow Barons (Cecilia McDowall’s Seraphim) and commissioned and premiered concertos by Jeremy Thurlow (with members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra), Eve De Castro Robinson (Auckland Chamber Orchestra and St Andrews New Music Ensemble), and Ian McQueen (The Wallace Collection and St Andrews New Music Ensemble). In 2024 he gave the world premiere of Paul Mealor’s Five Bagatelles for Peter’s Trumpet and John Wallace’s song cycle The Centre of Things (with tenor Jamie MacDougall and pianist Marianna Abrahamyan). His 2015 album Crystallise for trumpet and electronics included recordings of important works by Jonathan Harvey and Michael Clarke, the album establishing his practice as an improvisor. Together with Andrew Knight-Hill from the University of Greenwich, Bede has developed a number of new works, notably We Choose to go to the Moon (soundtrack for a film by Tim Fitzpatrick), Over Lunan (a site-specific project with Approxima Arts), Resonant Chamber (site-specific work for the Brunel Tunnel) and music designed for the L-ISA Hyperreal Sound System. He was the main performer in the NVA production Hinterland, for which he also served as musical consultant.
